The Times of India ( TOI ) is a daily newspaper of wide format in English very popular in India . Has the largest circulation among all English-language dailies in the world, in all formats (large format, compact, Berliner and online ) is owned by The Times Group , which in turn is owned by the Sahu Jain family .
In 2008 , the newspaper reported that with a circulation of more than 3.14 million copies was certified by the Audit Bureau of Circulations as the best-selling English daily worldwide, which was located in position 8 as best-selling newspaper in the world in any language. According to a survey of readership in India, 2008, the Times of India is the most widely read English newspaper in India with a readership of 13.3 million. According to ComScore , the TOI online version is the most visited Web page of a newspaper with 159 million visits in May 2009 , beating the Web pages of The New York Times , The Sun , Washington Post , Daily Mail and USA Today.

The Times of India was founded on November 3 of 1838 as The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce, during the British Rule. It was adopted in 1861 published every Saturday and Wednesday, The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce was launched as a bi-weekly publication. It contained news from Europe , America and the Indian subcontinent , which were transmitted between India and Europe via regular steam boats. The daily editions of newspapers began in 1850 and, for 1861 , the Bombay Times was renamed The Times of India . In the nineteenth century , the company employed more than 800 people and had a sizable circulation in India and Europe.

Originally British-owned and controlled, its last British editor was Ivor S. Jehu, who resigned in 1950. It was after the independence of India newspaper that the property was taken over by the then famous family of industry and Dalmiya then it was bought by Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain group Sahu Jain of Bijnore , Uttar Pradesh .
The Times of India is published by the group of media Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. This company, together with the group of companies known as The Times Group , also publishes The Economic Times , Mumbai Mirror , the Navbharat Times (uh daily of large format in Hindi ), the Maharashtra Times (a newspaper of large format in Marathi ).
The Times declares himself as a liberal newspaper in January and is sometimes described as irreverent.
In January 2007 , publishing in Kannada was launched in Bangalore and in April 2008, the edition was launched Chennai. Its main rivals in India are The Hindu and the Hindustan Times , which have the second and third position in terms of circulation.
